Country Couture Party

*Click on title to view original post*

It was Luca's 30th birthday party this weekend - he's a suit we work with, and he decided to have a bash out in the country in a wineland area called Riebeek Kasteel (Riebeek Castle). It's an interesting drive getting out there - first you drive past Century City (the Southern Hemisphere's biggest shopping mall... I reckon it probably rivals Vivo City), then you drive past oil refineries, then you drive past ostrich farms (signs on the road say "Don't Hoot - Ostriches getting laid!"), and just when you think it's gonna be a weird, drab industrial town, the valley clears and you're miraculously amongst vineyards ("Welcome to Shiraz country").

The theme for the party was "Country Couture", so I dug out all the denim I could find.

We thought we'd make a weekend out of it, so Kelly's art director, Michael, managed to find this cute little B&B called "Cape Francolin Art Hotel", run by an artist David, and his dog, Clive (Clive's name is also painted on the hotel signboard). This place is the sweetest little spot and very hard to describe... it's part art gallery, part workshop, part home, part guest-house. The house is crammed full of odds and ends, and there's a story to every piece displayed on the walls, in the corners, in the shed...

David says his claim to fame are the armchairs he's re-upholstered in coffee sackcloth (or gunnysacks, whatever you call them) and he also uses his home as a gallery space for other artists... there are wrought iron candelabra chandeliers hanging from his ceiling; chairs made out of what used to be pitchforks; pitchforks used as weathervanes/ windsocks outside in the garden (it looks like a cemetary of pitchfork weathervanes); a textile showroom in the roof of the house (the upstairs is literally covered in cushions upholstered in a riot of flowers, with stacks of floral textiles and upholstery samples. Laura Ashley would be proud.) There are jars of jam lined up in his larder, with all kinds of different china and porcelain - different colours, styles and textures... I guess he's what you'd call a stylish packrat. There's lots of stuff in the house, but it's not like it's messy or dirty in the least... everything in the house looked like it was beautifully art-directed for a shoot, yet it wasn't.

The Art Hotel is right next to a vineyard, and the pool is literally overlooking vines of grapes... and on the other end of the house, there are springboks grazing next to sheep. Next to the pool, there's a mulberry bush that has been fashioned into a lounge, and it's completely comfy to laze there all morning as we did today. It is as bizarre an experience as it sounds... but David is the sweetest and most accommodating host, even laying out a bottle of wine for the 4 of us to enjoy at the end of the day!

The party itself started off gently, with people rocking up in cowboy stetson hats and denim, but it got messy after dinner - we headed off to the only club in town, a shack-discotheque called "The View"... the resident DJ was playing with his arm in a cast, but he was in top-form, spinning a horrendous mix of Euro-trash and a medley of '80s pop hits REMIXED. Needless to say, we were decimated by the end of the night. More photos in album below.

"Yee har, giddyup cowboy!"

Kalk Bay
About 2 weeks ago, we went to Kalk Bay for Jake's birthday drinks. Kalk Bay's a quaint little seaside town lined with curio shops crammed full of random stuff... stuff from your grandma's closet, stuff from the old naval base round the corner in Simon's Town, stuff which you don't find in modern-day stores... it's a completely different vibe down there, and we hung out at a bar called Cape to Cuba, which is a bar done up Havana, Cuba style. Supposedly. (I've never been there so I wouldn't know... but it definitely has an exotic vibe about it). It's a beautiful beach-shack vibe made out of zinc roofs and painted wood-plank walls, and the attached Cuban restaurant next door is also crammed full of trinkets and ornaments, with hanging glass lamps and Che posters... was so distracted by the place that I forgot to take pix while we were there.

We ended up having fish and chips by the pier at Kalky's... yummy and fresh, served by real-life rough fisherwomen (who were yelling and smoking as they served you).

Solo Raver on Clifton Beach

*Click on link to view original post*

After work today, we went down to Clifton Beach with a bunch of friends for a picnic and to watch the sunset. For a Singaporean used to HOT HOT HOT & HUMID sticky yuckiness at the East Coast Park, it was a pleasant surprise that even though it's in the middle of summer and the average temperature's like a regular day back home at around 30 degrees C, it's not hot and sticky at all.

And once the sun sets, the temperature drops down to about 18 or 20 degrees. So there we were wrapped in our blankets, eating chips and dip when suddenly this lone ranger, I mean, raver... sparks up his twirly torch things and starts prancing around, practicing his moves. It was the most random thing, but we were treated to an hour of flame throwing and twirling, which was kinda cool (can you imagine if this happened on East Coast Beach? the cops would be there in a jiffy)... music's banned on the beach coz of the residents nearby, but this guy was dancing to a random beat in his head. This place is fulla hippies!

Day ?!? of the staircase?

*Click on title to view original post*

All I can say is... IT'S FINALLY DONE!

It got to the point where I got bored of it. I'd come home and not even be bothered to check on where these guys were at... but after about 2 weeks (8 or 9 working days), it's all shiny, sparkly and varnished. That last curvy bit of the balustrade was what they were struggling with.

Couldn't be bothered to upload pictures coz after day 5 it all kinda looked the same to me... Even the maid who comes once a week is bored of it already (we'd keep calling and telling poor Constance "sorry, don't come tomorrow they're not done yet. Come the day after." And the next day we'd have the same conversation again...)

What an anticlimax... More work-in-progress photos in the album below.

Day 5 of the Staircase mini-series

*Click on title to view original post*

So yesterday was the 5th working day and supposedly the last day of construction (YEAH, RIGHT!!!)

They've only just added the gangplank... and strangely enough, it doesn't look anything at all like our old staircase frame which it's supposed to be made out of. Which reminds me, we should ask them why this is the case.

More of the balustrade's been welded down, so what's left is the balustrade/ railing that goes from the stairs and sweeps up to the loft. And touching up bits & pieces here & there.

Kelly just went home during lunchtime today to check on them and apparently they're working fullsteam ahead. Seems like they'll need another 1 or 2 more days to be completely done. We're getting massive cabin-fever already and can't wait till we get the rest of the apartment back. To top it all off, apparently the municipality is shutting down electricity in the entire city tonight for "maintenance" reasons. ARGHHHHH!!!

More pix in album on the left.

Day 4 of the Staircase mini-series

The Balustrade's been attached halfway, and each column bit has been welded to the next. Still sounds kinda creaky when you walk up & down the stairs.

More angles in the album on the left.
