My Crowning Glory

Since there's been a slew of yoga posts so far, the rest of my friends and family are probably bored to tears. This did start off as a blog documenting our move to South Africa and then Australia, after all! (Too bad if you're bored, you can just unsubscribe if you're not interested in my path to enlightenment!) :p

So here's a little frivolous update on what I've done with my hair.

If you've known me a while, you'll know HAIR is a big thing with me. It's been all kinds of shades, it's been short and... for lack of a better word, "funky" (ugh, I hate that word). I found my soul-stylist with David at Toni & Guy back home and was his muse for like... erm... 12 years or something?

I've done hair shows and seminars for him and been his handy back-up if any of the other hair models bailed on him last minute (even though I'm so past my sell-by date, next to all the young and fresh teenyboppers!) So yeah, I went through hairstyles like changing underpants. Or how does that stupid saying go again?!

At the start of this year, I decided I was finally going to grow my hair out (again). I've never been able to get it past my shoulders. So every few months I try to grow it out (again). This time, I've been fairly successful.

What's with women and their hair, anyway? Sure, it's JUST HAIR... but... it's also so much more. I can't begin to tell you how stressful it is moving to a new place and trying to find a stylist that you click with. Coz if it goes wrong, it'll be DOOM & GLOOM for the next couple months of your life. I think that anxiety is completely valid. I am vain.

But I think I've finally found someone here I will definitely go back to again.

Presenting my new cut and colour. I've gone darker on top, with lighter bits at the bottom.

Didn't have my proper camera with me, but I had to take a picture of the spaceship look.

And yes, I've given up on trying to grow those bangs out. I'm trying to grasp onto any kind of an "edge" while growing the rest of the hair out (even though blunt bangs are so common now and are soooooo 3 years ago. I DON'T CARE.)

The moment before possible regret.

I actually quite like this new look. All spruced up and taken on my "proper" camera at home. :)

PS. Like my Mr. T gold chains?

Movember's Over, but the PR hasn't stopped!

The company PR'd our Movember competition, and it appeared on the local ad industry site. Kelly was one of the Movember men from the agency who appeared in the shoot.

The article appears here. If you haven't been following the blog, click here and here for more on Movember.

And these are Kelly's publicity shots. Nice!

Movember Men

Here's the update for Kelly's 'tache at the end of last week.

A few prizes were given out, and Kelly won the "Come sit on my Handlebars" prize! The prize he got for enduring a month of hillbilly facial fashion: A Carling Black Label cooler bag, T-shirt and a case of beer. Since he's not much of a drinker and doesn't appreciate freebies emblazoned with logos, he gave them all away. As his sponsors, Bronwyn and I share a voucher for the Wellness Warehouse.

The overall winner went to Ryno the Porno coz of his glorious manly man 'tache that went up the sides and almost joined up with his sideburns.

The other funny one was Kelly's partner, Mike, who shaved his beard off into a skinny 'tache on the sides of his face aka The Pringle Guy or The Koi Fish (he won the award for "He must have a big penis to pull THAT off"):

The other 2 prizes were the "Shopright/ Checkers Checkout Lady" Award (Mark's actually light blonde, but he dyed his 'tache brown. You couldn't hold a serious conversation with him, it was too distracting):

And the "Jerry Springer/ Deliverance" Award (You couldn't help staring at Dane's throat):

Summer Hair Part 2: The Moustache

Every November at our office is "Movember" month. Basically, it's a competition to see which guy can grow the most glorious moustache within a month. What would possess any guy to do this? Charity, of course!

...unless you're any of these guys.

Every guy gets sponsored by any of the girls in the office. The guy puts in R20 to be part of the competition, and his sponsor(s) chip in R2 for every day he stays in the competition (yes, some guys buckle under facial hair pressure and bow out). All money collected goes to a children's home to help them out for Christmas.

The final prize? The guy with the best tache wins a case of beer, sponsored by one of our alcohol clients, and the sponsor wins a spa voucher. I dunno who's going to judge and how they'll make the final decision, but it's fun to see most of the guys in the office sporting 5 o'clock shadows in an attempt to stay in the race. (Back home, they'll probably have to keep the competition running for at least 2 months in order for the Chinese boys to grow anything decent!)

Of course I've sponsored Kelly, and when the other producers heard that he joined the competition, they all wanted to back him too since he's such a hairy ang moh. He's already got a beard anyway so it's a matter of how much more gloriously Taleban he can get it (we're just trying to figure out how we're gonna split the spa voucher if he wins).

A few days ago, he decided to shape it into a "proper" moustache by shaving off most of the beard, and this is what he looks like now:

SHOCKING! He's growing it into a Hulk Hogan!

I'm not sure if I should hold his hand anymore when we're walking down the street. Maybe I should walk on the other side of the street, far away from him as well. Everyone had a good laugh at his hillbilly look.

There's a weekly round-up with pictures of each competing guy's tache. This is what they've put up for Kelly:
