Gaye's ** Birthday Party

Welcome to the official first post on the new site! I'm thankful to be rid of Windows Live Spaces. :p

Monday was Gaye's big ** Birthday bash (** = the unmentionable number) and she invited 20 of her friends for dinner at Tarragon restaurant.

It started off rather civilized, with most of the (old) folks in their **'s (Gaye and her friends are going to kill me now). But then of course everyone got drunker, and someone discovered the most random thing in the ladies' loo - one of those made-in-Japan remote-controlled toilets, complete with buttons for "posterior wash", "feminine wash", "dryer" and the most disconcerting option - "enema wash".

A semi-sober Kiki decided to pull her pants down and try out all options (except "enema wash") in front of the rest of us, while Mandi was filming the entire experience on her trusty Olympus. I was laughing so hard I forgot where my camera was (damn, those pix would've been funny).

By the end of the night, people were falling over themselves and crawling on the floors (literally), and a jolly good time was had by all. Good to know life's still fun after 21.

This is officially my last blog post on this Windows Live Spaces site. I've grown fed up of the unintuitive user interface, the messiness of layouts, the lack of customizing options, the banner ads on top, and the list goes on and on... I won't shut down this site and all old posts will still be available here, and an abridged version of these old posts are also available on the new Blogger site.

Aside from a brand new look on Blogger, there are so many new (easier) ways to get things blogged - and you can also subscribe to email updates so I no longer have to send out those long-winded emails (plus, it's a Google company and Google's cooler than Windows).

Moving onwards and upwards! See you on the other side.

Shoot in Parow, Cape Town

Straight after the Irene shoot, I headed back to Cape Town on another shoot for a different client the next day. This one was more fun - we had an extremely large lady that had to be rigged to a harness so it looked like she was being sucked into the sky, and we also did the same with a golf cart and motorbike.

...it took 3 men initially to hoist her up, but then when we had to change the angle where she was being lifted, it took a total of 5 men (3 on the ground, 1 on the roof of a building, and yet another one running in the opposite direction, hanging onto a crane beam for support). It was pretty hysterical. More photos in the photo album column and some videos below. (oh, forgot to add: This was also Kelly's and my first job together since we've been working at the same place again. Spot him in the pix!)

Shoot in Irene, Pretoria

Last Thursday & Friday, we were in Irene, Pretoria on a shoot. Pretoria's the official capital of South Africa (it's right next to Johannesburg, and both cities are growing so quickly that they're merging into one). Irene (pronounced Ai-ree-nee) is a suburban area with a few dairy farms in the area, and everywhere we went from the Irene Country Village Mall to the Irene Village Farmstall, there were cows and cow-themed everything, everywhere. Check this upside-down cow statue in the local village mall.


There was an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever in the area so we were told not to eat the cheese or drink the milk (although farmers were selling RAW milk - unpasteurised/ unhomogenised in the streets). YUCKS!
We were shooting a pastoral/ nature scene with the four seasons and it was glorious what art department did - check out rain in summer, snow in winter, lots of red & gold leaves in autumn (each individual leaf was dipped in double-velvet wall paint for extra strength, with glitter added on top), and pink cherry blossoms in spring. Oi & Thorsten in Cape Town

Oi & Thorsten came to Cape Town the same week I got back from Singers - they spent half the week at a wedding in the vineyards of Franchoek, then came back to spend the whirlwind weekend with us.

It was one of the windiest days ever - the Coast Guard had issued a coastal warning of winds up to 50kmh and the Cape Point was closed. But Oi was determined to finally get there - where the Atlantic & Indian Oceans meet, and it's also almost the Southern-most tip of the African continent (it's the fake end)... the real edge of the African continent goes around False Bay for another 3 hours... but we could see it from where we were and that was good enough. Besides, it was as cool to be at the point where the 2 oceans meet (and no, contrary to popular belief, you can't actually see a line where the warm water meets the cold. POOI!)

When we got there, the wind had died down (just a wee bit), enough for the park to be open again (so it was a good thing the 2hr drive wasn't for naught)... We trekked out as far South as we could get, only to come to a pole pointing us in the direction of "Singapore - 9,667km". HA!

The next day, we hit the tourist trail again and queued up to go up Table Mountain. The dilemma this time was whether Oi & T would make it to the airport in time, given the long Q to go up the mountain by cable car. The guard told us it would be a 1hr wait - we started at the back of the Q at 10.30am and finally made it to the top at 1pm. Go figure. (Vive l'Afrique!) After all that, we raced through a 360 degree walk on top of the mountain in 15 minutes, and Oi & T had to make their way back down again to catch the 4pm flight back to London. Wah lao! (glad it wasn't me! heh.)
